Spinal and Biologics Business Overview

Listen. Respond. Deliver.

Spinal and Biologicsdevelops and manufactures products that treat a broad spectrum of spine disorders.

Our Spinal and Biologics business is committed to advancing the treatment of spinal conditions, and as the global leader in today’s Spinal and Biologics market, we lead the way in innovative solutions to treating the Spine.

A crucial element to this innovation and market leadership is that our business is committed to development of new technologies through collaboration. We work with world-renowned surgeons, researchers and other innovative partners to offer state-of-the-art products and technologies for:

  • orthopaedics
  • neurosurgeons
  • interventional radiologists
  • Treatment of Spinal conditions, such as scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, including osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, and the areas of tumour and spinal trauma.

Our key technologies are:

Minimally Invasive or MAST Technologies

Minimal Access Spinal Technologies (MAST™) allow surgeons to operate through small incisions, utilising muscle-sparing techniques by working on the spine through small tubes and retractor systems.

Dynamic Stabilisation

A leading area for our spine portfolio in the spinal industry, the dynamic stabilisation products include three interspinous devices. Additionally, we offer cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacement devices, which assist in maintaining the spine’s natural range of motion.

As part of our biologics platform there is a surgically implanted medicine designed to initiate bone growth in a specific, targeted area. This medicine uses a naturally occurring human protein made using recombinant DNA technology that helps the body grow its own bone. A patient suffering from lower back pain associated with degenerative disc disease and requiring surgery may have the protein implanted to help fuse the lumbar vertebrae without the need for the surgeon to take bone from the patient’s iliac crest. A patient suffering from an injury with an open wound and a fracture of the tibia may have the medicine implanted to help heal the bone.

Spinal Fracture Management

Our Kyphon® Balloon Kyphoplasty products offer a minimally invasive treatment option for spinal fractures caused by cancer, osteoporosis or trauma.

Medtronic’s spinal business is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee in the USA, and has offices around the world.
